    Hi David,

Interesting site, I am seriously considering giving up city life to cattle or sheep farming in the country. Could you for a moment put yourself in the shoes of someone who has limited farming experience (my nan lived on a farm so I have some experience I guess visiting in school holidays also my wife’s family are farmers cotton, sunflower etc) and provide some pointers into what to take into consideration when purchasing land and capital requirements to get going. Any help will be much appreciated.

    Kind regards
    Hein

    Hi Hein,

Its a noble thing you are considering to make a change from city to country life. In a sense you are stepping out into the unknown but you are already imagining new possibilities for a better life and that is great.

Believe it or not, limited farming experience can be a good thing. Many farmers are caught up in old ways, doing things their fathers taught them and resisting change.

I would suggest you do your homework and talk to as many people in the industry as you can and learn as much as you can before taking the leap.
Talk to stock and station agents, rural financial councillors, your accountant and banks will all have some input about the do’s and dont’s .
Study the property guides – you may be better off leasing some ground for a year or two, running some stock and think about buying later.

It’s always hard to know what you want or need straight up, but you’ll find your ideas will develop over time. Let me know how you get on.

    Regards, David Ricardo
